Corpus Christi Chapter Present Their First Annual Scholarship

On May 7, 2007 Betty Surprenant (Tres.) Flora Boren (Pres.) went to Flour Bluff High School and presented Lauren Ashley Ude with a $500.00 scholarship. This was the first scholarship that we have given, but we hope to make this an annual award. The criteria was that the student had to be a high school senior, accepted by a college or university, and major in a sewing related field.

Lauren has been accepted by Baylor University in Waco, Texas, and will be studying Fashion Design. In her application for the scholarship, Lauren writes “I recently took sewing and designing classes at my school and I discovered I love to sew. I have many ideas for clothing designs.”

In the future, Lauren plans to do an internship in Europe and perhaps someday own her own business. She plans to design and create clothes that everyday women will enjoy wearing. She would like to design day and evening wear.

We are proud to have Lauren as our first recipient of a scholarship.

We had three applicants and all three were qualified. Since all three are interested in sewing our board voted to give each girl and one year free membership in the American Sewing Guild. Our hopes are that they will be inspired by what they see and read and will continue their membership in years to come.

Laura Davidson received 2007 Woman of the Year for the Preceptor Kappa Lambda chapter of Beta Sigma Phi. Laura was selected by secret ballot as the one outstanding person to accomplish goals for this social and service-oriented organization. We are proud of her philanthropic endeavors entitling her to this award.

Judy Johnson - won 1st place on her quilt at the 2007 Costal Bend Quilt show

The Quilt's title is' Graduation' It is an original design, the Chinese characters on the bottom of the quilt say " Congratulation Granddaughter". The blocks are hand appliqed, the flowers are three dimensional , and the block and flowers are handed beaded. Judy made it for her granddaughter who just graduated from High School.

ASG member Laura Osbun - Has work that she has done with Suzanne Horvitz on displayed in Art Institutes in Kyoto, Japan. Larua's work was also on display at the special exhibit "Fiberart For a Cause: an American Cancer Society Fundraiser" during the 2006 Houston International Quilt show. A picture of her "special postcard" is featured on page 67 of the 2006 Commemorative Catalogue.
