SEW IT'S SATURDAY
 March (2007)
Meeting and Service Project

Once a month the American Cancer Society and Spohn’s Cancer Center meet with chemotherapy patients for the “Look Good—Feel Better” program, which is designed to assist these patients with their mental and physical well-being. About ten members of Sew! It’s Saturday! were delighted to be able to contribute to this worthwhile service project as they gathered to lend their sewing skills in creating chemo-hats that will play a major part during the monthly meetings of these patients. Through heart-felt sewing and loving embellishing, about 11 hats were completed for this program--with several kits taken home for completion and additional embellishment for “show and tell” at the April 28 meeting. While laboring over these creations, we received some great coverage from KRIS, Channel 6 (thanks to our publicity chairwoman, Lynn Harris). The crew was genuinely interested in our endeavors as they questioned, filmed and presented the service project in an extremely tasteful news report.

Many, many thanks go out to our hard-working Nancy Darnell, who coordinated the program (cutting out all the hats and making all the kits), and to ViAnn Herman and Carolyn Pence, who demonstrated the construction of the hats and offered their expertise to all the sewing volunteers. Ronnie Gerberich graciously donated hand-made travel pillows as door prizes for the meeting, as well as Easter goodie bags for everyone attending. Door prizes were won by ViAnn Herman and Sharon Pittman.
