SEWING IN THE MALL
October 27, 2009
Thanks to ViAnn Hermann for coordinating ouch pouches for Christus Spohn, and La Palmera Mall.
On Tuesday, October 27, the Corpus Christi Chapter of the American Sewing Guild, Christus Spohn Breast Care Program, and La Palmera Mall will be joining efforts to support breast cancer patients. From 8:00 AM until 2:00 PM, over 20 volunteers with the American Sewing Guild will be making “Anti-Ouch Pouches” also known as “Patient Comfort Pillows” for breast cancer patients. Christus Spohn's Breast Care Program will be providing the supplies for the pouches and La Palmera Mall will be supplying the facilities. The activities will be taking place on the main level in front of the new food court area (Dillard's wing.)
Over 120 “Anti-Ouch Pouches” will be made for patients involved in the Christus Spohn Breast Cancer Navigator Program. This program provides individually designed “care maps” for a newly diagnosed breast cancer patients and their family. The program's goal is to guide the patient through the health care maze and help eliminate situations that may cause stress.
An “Anti-Ouch Pouch” is a soft pillow designed to be worn snugly against the underarm area to cushion the area after breast surgery. The wedge shape gently holds the arm away from the body when the user is standing. The strap holds the pillow in place without having to sue sore arm muscles to “clutch” it. The strap is adjustable and the fiberfill may be adjusted via the overlapped opening.
Persons interested in learning more about the Christus Spohn Breast Care Program/Cancer Navigator Program can call 361-985-5600 or come to the mall where the program will be represented from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. To volunteer to help make the “Anti-Ouch Pouches” contact ViAnn Herman, ASG Community Service Chairman, at 361-774-5962. - written by Karen R Vaughan - Publicity Chairman.

SEW IT'S SATURDAY
March (2007)
Meeting and Service Project
Once a month the American Cancer Society and Spohn’s Cancer Center meet with chemotherapy patients for the “Look Good—Feel Better” program, which is designed to assist these patients with their mental and physical well-being. About ten members of Sew! It’s Saturday! were delighted to be able to contribute to this worthwhile service project as they gathered to lend their sewing skills in creating chemo-hats that will play a major part during the monthly meetings of these patients. Through heart-felt sewing and loving embellishing, about 11 hats were completed for this program--with several kits taken home for completion and additional embellishment for “show and tell” at the April 28 meeting. While laboring over these creations, we received some great coverage from KRIS, Channel 6 (thanks to our publicity chairwoman, Lynn Harris). The crew was genuinely interested in our endeavors as they questioned, filmed and presented the service project in an extremely tasteful news report.
Many, many thanks go out to our hard-working Nancy Darnell, who coordinated the program (cutting out all the hats and making all the kits), and to ViAnn Herman and Carolyn Pence, who demonstrated the construction of the hats and offered their expertise to all the sewing volunteers. Ronnie Gerberich graciously donated hand-made travel pillows as door prizes for the meeting, as well as Easter goodie bags for everyone attending. Door prizes were won by ViAnn Herman and Sharon Pittman.
